Avocados are rich in folic acid, with about 67 μg found in half an avocado. Folic acid is important for the development of cells, including red blood cells. Like water-soluble vitamins, it cannot be stored in the body and must therefore be consumed each day. Folic acid is particularly crucial during periods of rapid growth and cell division, such as pregnancy and early childhood. Women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy should consume 400 μg per day to help prevent miscarriages and neural tube defects in the fetus.
